Achieving Your Goals

   

Goal setting is a widely used, highly efficient way of recognizing and acquiring the important things that you want out of life. Setting a goal can help you determine exactly what you are trying to achieve which in turn will help you determine any obstacles which can hold you back from completing them in a timely manner.

It can be very motivating when you set and achieve a goal. Your self-confidence will also soar as you realize how you can make the most out of your abilities by getting in to the habit of setting and achieving goals.

Setting goals help you to focus your attention and organize your time. Goal setting will enable you to get the most out of life. When set properly, you can measure your progress with what might have seemed unachievable at first.

In order to set a goal, you must first decide what it is that you would like to achieve. After you have determined what you would like to achieve, you must break it down into small steps which will bring you closer to the prize. Once you have established the steps you must then take action and start working towards your goal.

The setting of goals in different categories which are of importance to you, can give you broad, well-balanced achievements in all aspects of what is important in your life.

Some of the most popular topics used for goal setting as well as some examples of what these goals may be include:

Financial - I am going to save $ 500 August 1st 2005

Physical - I am going to lose 10 lbs by May 19th 2005

Educational - I am going to study for half an hour each day until July 27th 2005

Breaking a bad habit - I am going to quit smoking before my 35th birthday

Career - I will start my own business by December 31st 2012

Mental - I will not listen to or give in to any negativity.

Pleasure - I will go on a 7 day cruise to Ireland by March 17st 2007

Community - I will volunteer at my local homeless shelter at least one day a month

Family- I will call my mother at least one day a week

Once you have determined your goals and the category they belong in, you should then prioritize them in the order of which they are of the most importance to you. Review your goals and re-prioritize them until they reflect the type of outcome you are trying to achieve and are satisfied with your plan. Make sure these goals are what you personally would like to accomplish, not what someone else would like you to accomplish.

Once you have set these goals give yourself a reasonable deadline. Give yourself a little extra time so you won't feel overwhelmed or get discouraged. Once you have set a time limit, give yourself a daily to-do list with at least three small things you can do each day to work toward your goal. For instance, say you wanted to write a book, if you wrote three pages a day that would be 1, 095 pages in one year! That would be enough information right there from those three pages a day to fill four 273 page books and still have a couple pages left over to start your next book! Now, let's pretend you wanted to take four small steps a day towards your goals and decided to write four pages of a book each day, that would equal 1,460 pages, that would equal five 292 page books in one year! The possibilities are endless! The more you can do each day to work towards your goals, the more you can get done. And the more you get done, the more fulfilling and rewarding your life will be, knowing that you've accomplished so much.
